Found this looking for something unrelated, immediately thought of the RockBox community and its possible usability as a replacement for players with 1.8" mechanical ZIF-drives.
However, I can't find any pricing, and this doesn't do me any good. Just thought I'd share this, anyways. Tom's Hardware has this up on their site and has some news articles about the brand and products.

funny I was looking into the same subject today!
I have recently replaced the battery in my old and forgotten x5 iaudio and very pleased with the results.
Now I'm thinking about upgrading the HDD also to something newer. I've seen posts of people having success with CF cards, but a SSD would be even nicer.
The thing is I have a hard time figuring out what kind of connector my old HDD exactly uses it's a Hitachi MK2006GAL 20GB disk (same as the old ipods). As far I can tell it's 50-pins ZIF connector, could you confirm this? Or can someone give more specific details about these drives connectors? While searching for this type of drive it appears they are pretty rare these days (maybe I haven't looked good enough) and the ones You suggest are very pricy, over 400$ for 128 GB and + 200$ for the 64GB versions.
Though there are cheaper ssd's out there with different connectors, so using an adapter and possibly a smaller 1 inch SSD could be a cheaper solution.

You can find some information on our wiki page HardDriveReplacement. The X5 uses a 50 pin connector (no ZIF) but SSDs seem to be offered with different connector types and there are 1.8'' ones that just fit. If you had a 20 or 30GB X5 before and look into replacing it with another harddrive then you would also have to have an eye on the drive's thickness (single vs. dual platter) whereas SSDs don't have the problem.
I'm very happy with the SSD in my M5 which basically uses the same case as the X5 and I believe there are other threads around here that deal with those Photofast SSDs that mine has.
