Database & battery issues -- Rockbox or my player?
« on: June 16, 2011, 06:47:55 AM »
I've been using Rockbox for a couple of years now (the last year of it with this iRiver H10 20gb), but the last 2-3 months have been having some issues with it.  I don't know whether it's because I'm getting some weird Rockbox bugs, or there's a hardware failure of some sort, or both; hopefully folks can help me figure it out.

The below are all happening separately anywhere from every few days. They also all appeared separately shortly after different updates.

1.  1-2 times per week, when I tell it to shut down, I get the message "database not ready", even if I've only used the radio that session.  If I try shutoff again, it usually will then shut down without complaint, but a couple of times I've had to use a paperclip to force a reset.  When it does shut off in these cases, the hardware makes the same hard poweroff sound that I hear if I try to boot it with a dead battery (normally, it makes no audible sound when it turns off).

2. Maybe once a week, it immediately starts scanning the drive for songs as if it has never done so before upon being turned on.

3. A few times per week, when I tell it to turn on, it immediately dies claiming the battery is dead -- if I plug it in (computer or power adapter) for even 5 minutes, when I next turn it on, I'll be able to get a couple of hours minimum usage out of it.  I'm always diligent about setting the button-lock switch so it can't get accidentally turned on, and before this started happening I was maybe recharging it 1-2 times per month while still using it twice a day (total of ~2-4 hours).

4. Every 2-4 weeks or so, while it's on FM radio mode, it will start cycling through the preset stations as if I'm holding down the forward button. From there, any screen I go to (preset station selection, main menu, etc.) will always show the selection bar cycling downwards.  If I turn it off and boot back up, it acts normally again and won't revert to the misbehavior for weeks.

Anyone think that clean-reinstalling Rockbox, running fsck on the drive, reformatting the drive, or similar things might help?  (I've run fsck a few times before on it when Linux would only mount it in read-only mode after system crashes seemingly mimicked being removed while mounted or in use, but not since these issues began.)

Thank you for any suggestions or experience others have to offer; I hope everyone has a good day.
