NOT clueless but starting to think I should be on the short bus

I don't have a card for the cardslot....should that be showing up anyway?

Llorean:
Possibly, depending on whether you have windows set to display or hide empty drives.

I'm running win7 ultimate 64. on a desktop. It only allows me to look at files on my clip+ if I'm under "auto-detect". If I switch to MSC I get a drive letter but clip+ seems to believe I should give it a microdisc & I'm unable to access files.

I've tried the auto install of RB 1st as a wholesale install of both, then doing them individually. first the bootloader then RB. I make sure of course I have the firmware on the machine to point to when I do this install. All I get is "refreshing media" and I'm back to my same OF.

If I go to my laptop a lenovo running win7 home premium. I am prompted when I do an autoinstall of RB to change my USB from Autodetect to MSC....so far so good, expected. I change it and do the install using the automated method. When I'm done it says "updating firmware" -also good. When I resart clip+ I get once again “*PANIC* disk_init failed!”. If I push the “home” button it goes into a normal boot-up to the regular Sansa OF.

I've documented all of this in my posts but I thought I'd try to put it all together.
On both of these machines I've tried the manual cmd window w/the 3 files creating "patches.bin" then renaming to "clppa.bin".

I need an XP machine (I think) which I don't have at the moment. I'm thinking Win7 is the problem. I've not read through the forum for to see if this is a common issue.

Thanks all that have helped. I've now tried upward of 20 times to do this install and get the same results so for the time being I'll just use the clip+ as is.

Llorean:
I've installed on a Clip+ from Win7 home premium just fine.

What you need to do is figure out why you can't mount it in MSC mode. If the hardware isn't working right (and you're describing it definitely not working right) there's no reason to expect Rockbox to work right. Given that the errors you're getting (disk_init failed, plus unable to mount properly) both point to bad internal storage it sounds like the player's just beginning to suffer from some sort of storage failure.

Thanks I will explore that a bit more. It is brand-new (never a guarantee of course).  It has no problems with the original OF. It seems to behave slightly better with home premium than it does w/ultimate. I may have to leave well enough alone I can't very well return it to Sansa :)
