NOT clueless but starting to think I should be on the short bus

I used to have an e200, and installed rockbox and it went w/out a hitch.

NOW!

Running os7 ultimate 64
sansa clip plus
firmware: 01.02.09A [now] orig. 01.01.35

Check USB Mode is set to MSC
Went to Sansa site and got firmware.
Installed RxBx untility v1.2.10

Plug in Clip+

Configuration splash screen: Good all is hooked up.
Hit "complete installation"

"progress window" opens---->select firmware file opens: pick "clppa.bin"
downloading bootloader, patching firmware, extracting file etc
theme installation comes up--->I pick 3, fep [cause im old as dirt],iCu, and rene
"installation finiished successfully"
Unplug from USB cable -"firmrware upgrade in progress" -"upgrade completed"

now, and this has happened the last 8 times i've installed this, I turn on the Clip+
I get *panic* in yellow followed by "disk_init failed!
If at this junction I hit the "house" button it boots normally and the power button functions as an off button ...as it should be.

Now I reconnect it to the USB and go in and there is a .rockbox folder.

So what am i doing wrong? I can't listen to "Nurse with Wound" and Barry Manilow like this

I believe I understand the manual install process although I don't get the command line part of your explanation. Could you elablorate a bit? I can get to the zipfile on my desktop via cmd window, but not sure how that changes things. Also I may be handling it wrong because when I type in the path to the zip file and hit return, it opens a window with .rockbox in it...or is that the point?

I'm not sure what zip you're talking about, but the install directions are in the manual.  Just follow them, but when you need to download the bootloader, use the one I linked (which is not a zip file).

I'm curious if your player will downgrade even further then .15.  Can you try and see if it will let you flash this firmware file:

You don't need to try that with rockbox, just the regular firmware.

It carried out the downgrade and is working properly.  Does flashing the original firmware wipe the bootloader as well?

It does.

Can you use the command line in Windows?  If so, you could try using the manual installation instructions in the manual, and then when prompted to download the bootloader, use this one instead:

No idea if a newer bootloader will help, but its probably worth a shot.  Some improvements have been made to the storage driver lately.

The first post is about updating the original firmware without rockbox.  You can do that if you want, but you don't need to since you're trying to install rockbox.  The second post is about trying an updated bootloader that hopefully corrects the problem you have.   That's what you want to do.

2.2.3. Bootloader installation from Windows
1. Create a folder called “rbinstall” on your desktop, and then extract the OF, the
bootloader and mkamsboot into it.
2. Open a new command prompt, and navigate to the “rbinstall” folder.
3. Run mkamsboot.exe, passing the name of the OF and bootloader files that you
downloaded, in addition to a name for the output file.

If mkamsboot.exe does not report success, then retry or abort.

No, "passing" is correct here.
In the step it is referring to, you are passing a few parameters to mkamsboot.exe so it can create your patched firmware file.

If you have followed those directions to the letter, and you have created a folder on the desktop called "rbinstall" and it contains the files:

bootloader-clipplus.sansa
Then, all you need to do is open the command prompt by pressing WinKey+R and then typing "cmd" (without the quotes) and then pressing "Enter").
A window will open with text similar to:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your_User_Name>
In this window, type the following:

If this process is successful, in the folder "rbinstall" you created on the desktop there will now be a file called:

Copy this file to the root of your DAP, and rename it to:

clppa.bin
Now "Safely Remove" the device, and unplug USB.
Wait for the firmware installation to finish.
Done, you now have a shiny Rockboxed device and all is well in the world.

Except now, Clip+ shows up as removable disk and asks to "please insert a disk into...".
It is on MSC.
If it's on Auto Detect I get a the Sansa icon w/no drive letter and can't do boo. What am i forgetting?
This is running on Win7 Ultimate OS
OF is 1.02.15A"
I'm still stuck with this installation. I'll try again. It seems to not want to install and instead I get a message that neither RB or the OF won't start. I can go back in and re-drop the bin files then all is ok, w/OF but no RB

Tried this again. Followed the instructions to the letter. rbinstall folder.>passed the 3 files together>got a file called patched.bin>copied it to my sansa>renamed it clppa.bin.

When I disconnected the player it did not go through the firmware installation, nor did I find rockbox folder on my player.

So I'm still doing something wrong....

I'm not sure why your player didn't do the firmware update.  Did you safely eject it?

However, you should notice that this step is for the Rockbox bootloader installation only.  The .rockbox folder is obtained by unzipping rockbox-sansaclipplus.zip to your player (or having Rockbox Utility do it for you).  You shouldn't expect to find it there until you install the Rockbox firmware.

Dang it! Yes, I forgot that, re: sansaclipplus.zip.
I do not have a option to "safely eject", right-click doesn't give me that option. Although just unplugging it after I load files on it hasn't seemed to affect it

The screenshots look like you're copying the files to the player in MTP mode. I don't see how this should work ...

Yes, about that. If I put the player in AutoDetect. I'm able to access the player either via "My Computer" -the player shows up under the drives on my machine, but w/out a drive letter.

If I put the player in MSC, I get "removable disk (H)" and am unable to do anything. Clicking on it of course says 'please insert a disk into...."

I've SNAFU'd something but I'm not clear on what it is.

Maybe I should start all over.

I'm assuming (always dangerous) that running Win7 Ultimate64 is not the issue, however I don't have another machine set up with XP on it to find out

You should get two drives, one for the internal memory and one for the card slot.
