Fuzev2 Flashlight app has destroyed my player
« on: June 09, 2011, 03:53:13 PM »
I tried to use my Sansa Fuze last night but one of the earbud covers was missing so I booted the thing up and launched the flashlight application in Rockbox.

After 30 seconds I felt a hot sensation in my hand; the hand the MP3 player was in at the time. And then suddenly the screen faded out and didn't turn on again. So I rebooted it and the screen faded in and out from pretty much off to a little bit darker than I usually have. And it heats up to unbearable temperatures every time I did this.

Quite honestly I'm absolutely terrified to turn the damn thing on, and there's no way I'm plugging it into my PC. And I can't send it back to Sandisk since I bought it refurbished from eBay which came without a warranty. Even if I did have a warranty I'm fairly certain they'd tell me to stick it in my ear for installing Rockbox on the damn thing.

I'm at a complete loss at what to do, at least I can still use my Clip+ in the meantime.

This issue has been reported by a few people before.  It seems a fraction of players can't handle being set to maximum brightness.  This was recently corrected in SVN (at least as far as we know), but since you still had the problem I'm guessing you're running an older build like 3.8.1.

If you search the forums, some people have reported the disabling the LED wheel lights fixes the problem, but I have no idea how well that works.  I only have a FuzeV1, which doesn't have any issues with backlight.

Do you know the address for the SVN? I might give that a go if I can summon up the courage to connect this thing to my PC.

Left side of your screen, "current build".

Quick update, I discovered that the screen cannot display when the clickwheel light is on so I have disabled that.

But the problem I'm most worried about is that the back near the bottom is heating up to terrifying temperatures. I believe this is a hardware problem but as I said in the original post I bought this refurbished from eBay so I don't know if Sandisk will accept it if I sent it to them with Rockbox installed.

So, un-install it ;)

Your PC won't be damaged by plugging the malfunctioning player into it.

I said before in the first post that I bought it refurbished and it arrived without any resemblance of a warranty.

But you also mentioned sending it back to SanDisk, and that you were worried they would not accept it with Rockbox installed...so, I'm confused.  ???

From what I've read, installing Rockbox would void my warranty, but it didn't come with one in the first place.

Would Sandisk accept the player and give me a replacement even without a warranty.

I do not believe anyone is suggesting that. .  [st.] probably missed the negative in your first post.

If you paid for it, sure.

And what I meant with my statement in the previous post was perhaps a little naughty...I simply meant that if Rockbox isn't installed, there's no warranty voided ;)
But since you have no warranty to begin with, this isn't of any concern for you.
