IPOD Video 5.5gen connection problem
« on: June 01, 2011, 04:33:02 PM »
Today I tried to transfer some files to my Ipod, but when I connect via USB to the computer the unit freezes at the Rockbox screen, and my computer won't recognize the device any longer.

I've reset the unit, but the problem persists.

Any help is much appreciated.

TIA

Jim

Use Apple's emergency disk mode to connect.  Then try running a file system check.

Thanks for the reply. Not sure how to start in emergency disk mode and can't find it in the manual.

Can someone simplify for a old guy?

The apple docs say it should say "do not disconnect" so apparently something went wrong.  Try more?

Tried a couple more times same result. It operates fine and charges, just can't get a connection to the computer.  ???

Maybe your cable or USB port are bad?

I've tried mutliple cables and computers. It does charge, but maybe there is a problem with the USB port on the Ipod that transfers data?

It's possible.  If both Apple's Disk Mode and Rockbox's USB mode stopped working at around the same time, it is consistent with a hardware failure.

Bummer.  >:(
Repairable?

Should I wait for the Ipod Classic build? I need a high capacity .flac supported player?

Thanks!

Make sure you have eliminated other causes before giving up on it.  I though my Gigabeat F40 was having a similar problem.  It turned out some lint had gotten into the dock connector, preventing it from mounting properly while docked.

Bump for any more advice? Unit is working great and charges via USB..just can't get a computer interface...beginning to think it's a software issue.

Is there a way to format the unit and start over?

Thanks!

If you think its a software issue, try the Apple emergency disk mode.  That will work regardless of what state teh software is in.

Thanks, Saratoga...tried again and I'm in disc mode, but still getting the check mark and OK to disconnect. I connect to the computer and it starts charging, but no recognition. Am I missing something small and obvious?
