Clip V2 - no forward/back, battery drains
« on: June 01, 2011, 04:27:26 PM »
Thought I seek help on the following two issues.

The first is the forward and backward doesn't work at all during play. Pressing left/right doesn't do anything. Holding them works as implemented. This has plague me on several versions now, even the current build and beta.

With the latest build my battery now drains even if it's powered off. To verify this I charged it to full, several times now, and just leave it off for a day. When I come back the battery indicator is always < 100% usually at 80% or so. If I use the player the drain is much worse. I haven't time it but I usually can go two weeks before recharging. Now I can only do about 2 days of pool listening. Sorry, I didn't time the drain. But it's very noticeable.

The forward/backward is very annoying as the only workaround to this is to go to the playlist and manually select the next file, which sucks because the cursor does not follow the next song. It only follows IF the screen goes back to Now Playing, but then you have to get back into the playlist to forward/backward.

Any help would be appreciated. It may be just my player but it's the only clip I have left as I've given away all of my others to family members. This audio player is that great in sound quality :)

Have you enabled "Prevent track skipping" by accident?

Thanks, track skipping was on be default I assumed. Never would have figure this one out if not for your advice :)

Went to the bookstore for 3 hours on a full charge, continuous play (no forward/backward/menu/etc.), now battery is a tad below 50%. I might just end up removing rockbox altogether is battery is this bad.

Did battery life worsen in Rockbox at some point?

"Prevent track skipping" definitely isn't enabled by default...

What happens most often in my experience is that people misinterpret the meaning of it, and believe it to be some form of anti-skip buffer.

Might revert back to the previous firmware to get battery life back, it was actually really good on the previous version. I can't fathom why battery would drain with the unit turned off. I've already confirmed this on several charges already. Really sucks to be honest. Maybe the unit is becoming defective :D I'll revert back to the previous firmware and see what happens.

As for the skipping, it's fix so no biggie. I just load the firmware and the music so not sure how its on.

Great software guys, keep it up and thanks!

There is an issue that has popped up from time to time, but is incredibly difficult to catch (in the sense of debugging it after the fact), whereby an upgrade can make certain (completely valid) config settings go...for lack of a better way to put it "very messed up".

But if I understand correctly this was a first time installation?

It was an update to a first time installation :) but yea I just found rockbox not too long ago. I haven't played with any settings since all I really need is to play the music.

I'm not sure exactly what [St.] means by "very messed up" but if messed up settings are a potential explanation then resetting them to the defaults might help.

Alright, did a few more test on the battery issue. I believe this is just a display error, for the most part. Even on a full charge, once turned off and on it'll show 10% less. In addition, around 75% or so when a song is played the indicator on the playing screen shows less than the indicator at the menu. This doesn't happen at 100% charge though. The drop in the indicator is quite significant, I guess around 15-20%.

This doesn't resolve my clip not lasting as long as usual though. Anyone have the same issue? This is not a issue for me at all really, just wanted to post my observations.

Battery is dead as of previous posting. Exclude 30min for my lunch and that's how long my unit lasted on a full charge. Quite sad, really sad.

Do you have the battery display set to graphical or numerical?

The screen on the Clip(s) don't have enough resolution to show a graphical battery indicator that's anything other than a rough guide really.

The bitmap strip for the .wps shows:
"(charged/charging), empty, <five intermediate steps>, full" and is only 16px wide.

The bitmap strip for the statusbar shows:
"(unknown (pretty much never displayed)), empty, <thirteen intermediate steps>, full".

So...there's the apparent difference in battery level explaining itself right there.

No, I haven't mess with any settings yet. I'm charging the unit just now so it'll be a while. Once done, I switch to numerical and see. Still, the battery goes out quicker.

Only thing I can find to display the battery in numerical form is the DancePuffDou theme. I can also view it in the Rockbox info screen. The Dancepuffdou theme is not a good theme. The scrolling song title has a horizontal blinking line through it. If the title is short, it's just a straight horizontal line. Very annoying so I won't keep it in this state.

And yes, it dropped 10% after powering on. Now at 86% in 5minutes. It tells me I should have 14 hours of playtime but I be lucky to get 7.

Turned on the clip this morning to find out I can't skip forward/backward any longer. The "Prevent Track Skipping" is still on "NO" and I haven't even touch anything.

Anyone know what is going on with my clip? I've tried turning on/off and nothing changes.

I'm not psychic but you might check to see if you enabled Party Mode.
