5.5g Ipod 80gb not booting
« on: May 29, 2011, 09:35:01 AM »
Hi all,

I have installed Rokbox on my 80GB Ipod classic and was working great but I think I let the battery run out (might have been in my bag and something pressing the wheel) and now I cant charge it.
I have been all over the Apple forums and they saying that it has not got enough juice to boot so just have to leave it plugged in and reboot it till it comes back to life and I have done that and it almost came back to life.

Now when I plug into wall socket or my dock it boots up to Apple logo and then flashes the Rockbox logo and the with a rather cute squeak it turns off and then just keeps doing that again and again.

When I plug into computer I just get the 'please wait, very little battery' warnign and it does not show up on my computer.

Last night when I attached to doc it booted into Itunes and said fully charged. I rebooted it and then it started its squeaking and rebooting thing when plugged it but when not plugged it does nothing.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Les

Can you please post the serial number from the back or try to find your iPod here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1353 ?

The symptoms you are describing are simply not possible with the device you have. This may be an iPod video or something else but it's definitely not a Classic 80GB.

If it is a Video, then turn on the hold switch and then plug it into the AC adapter. It should turn on and either boot into the original Apple firmware, or first into the low battery screen and then after a while into the original firmware. Either way, as long as it's not resetting constantly, leave it like that overnight and it should be fine in the morning.

Hi
Thanks for reply. I have done that and now it will boot into itunes firmware but not rockbox and will only do it when plugged in, as soon as remove from doc it just dies.
Have I killed the battery?

Thanks

Apparently. Was it possibly exposed to excessive heat in that bag?

Hmmm, I don't think so. Can't image when it would have been exposed. But is 4 years old and is first sign of trouble with it. So suppose am lucky. Will get a batt off eBay and try it.
Thanks for help.

Well it just came back to life this morn!!! These things have a mind of their own, I just had to talk sweetly to it and give a bit of a cuddle apparently :)
