Understanding the Files menu
« on: May 26, 2011, 12:04:16 PM »
I'd like to understand why there are three (at least) Music folders accesible via the Files menu (on a Sansa Clip+).  When I select Files from the Main Menu, I see:

   ##MUSIC##
   ##PORT##
   AUDIBLE
   AUDIOBOOKS
   MUSIC
   Playlists
   PODCASTS
   etc.

From ##MUSIC## I see:

  Audiobooks
  Music
  Playlists
  etc.

What is the purpose of ##MUSIC## versus MUSIC at the top level?  And why are the contents of ##MUSIC## similar to but not the same as the contents of Files?  Also, why are there Playlists directories at different levels?

Ask the one that created that folder structure on your player. Rockbox does not require any specific folder structure (except for its own folder .rockbox, which isn't shown normally).

Where did it come from?
That mysterious ##MUSIC## folder doesn't show up when I look at the file structure via the USB connection, nor does it show up when I operate the player in its native (non-Rockbox) mode.  It must have been introduced by the Rockbox installation, since I can't think of anywhere else it would have come from.  Are there any other possibilities?

The original firmware created that directory and then hides it when connected to the PC over USB.

##MUSIC## Directory

So is the ##MUSIC## directory purely an artifact, of no known use?  The only nonempty information I could find in it is a Rhapsody connection.

If you use the OF presumably it'll start storing its junk in there.

Those '##' directories are created by the original firmware.  You can delete tham (I often do) but they will be reacreated if you unattach the player from your PC while the OF is running.

As I understand it, the ##MUSIC## folder is where the original firmware stores music files that are transferred to it using MTP mode. For whatever reason, the Sansa firmware doesn't make MSC-transferred and MTP-transferred content simultaneously viewable on a PC; it will only show content that has been transferred in the mode you are currently connecting with.
