Post-Rockbox: My Fuze v2 Now Won't Talk to My PC

I have a brand new Fuze v2 (4 GB), fresh out of the package. Having long read about RockBox, I decided to give it a whirl... oops.

The installation all seemed to go just peachy and the device now seems happy except... it no longer shows up on my computer... not on "My Computer", not through "Disk Management", not through "System>Hardware Devices"... and no longer even to the RockBox installer...

The only proof that it's even connected to the USB port is that the screen lights up when I plug/unplug the cable. Other than that... Nothing.

I tried the hard reset of holding the button for about 30 seconds and the device turns on then off... it plays the sample files on the device and all the RockBox extras seem functional... it's just invisible to the computer through the USB port.

Did RockBox and Windows conspire to render my new Fuze useless?

WinXP SP2

are you sure your fuze is in the current correct usb mode?

xyrn:
I'm not sure of anything about this, really. I did try connecting to another computer just hoping but to no avail.

It was in MSC mode before I installed Rockbox but I'm not sure about now and I'm not sure how to find out. I can't seem to find the USB mode setting.

If you could provide some guidance, I'll certainly check. Some sort of setting seems like it would cause this behavior... just weird that the Rockbox installer doesn't see it now whereas it did in order to do the install.

How do I find the USB setting in the Rockbox installation on the Fuze?

tpijag:
You set it from the sansa firmware.

Rockbox installer will not see the player if the usb mode is incorrect.
I am done for the night. On the rare chance you have not read the manual, you may need this to boot into the sansa firmware.

Thanks for the input.

It was set correctly prior to the installation of Rockbox and the installation seemed to go swimmingly. The various components appeared to unpack and install without errors and it let me pick a theme without a problem.

At this point, Rockbox appears to be properly installed on the Fuze and I can get at the various tools and settings. The only problem is that immediately after installing the Rockbox firmware (if I'm using the correct terminology?), the device no longer shows up on the WinXP hardware list. Just prior to Rockbox, it did - which is how I was able to install it.

The Fuze firmware was the latest update and, as I said, the USB mode was set to MSC prior to Rockbox going onto the device. I don't know if it changed somehow and I'm not able to find anything in the device's new (Rockbox) menu system that allows me to set it or change it.
