Ipod won't boot into Rockbox

I have a 4gen 30GB ipod video which has been running rockbox for a few years.  The other day some problems started to appear in stability of the hardware so I decided to do a complete reinstall of the base system + the most current stable release of rockbox.

Unfortunately, and despite rebooting the machine over 10 times, the system does not want to boot in to rockbox.

could apple have done somethigng sneeky with their release and not incremented the release level?  When I reatored it said I was running the most current release ???

Puzzled and confused.

If you reinstall the apple firmware it uninstalls rockbox.  Reinstall the bootloader and rockbox.
