Turn off after fully charged iPod Video RockBox 3.8.1
« on: May 21, 2011, 08:01:21 AM »
Why iPod do not turn off after it fully charged? I mean when it connected to 220V outlet, not in computer USB. After it fully charged it stay to work and after a while battery start to drain. I think, if do not do nothing, just need to charge battery, after charging it must turn off.

Charge the iPod with it turned off. It even charges faster (at least mine does).
Even when you connect it through USB, it is still charging even if it is turned off.

Even when you shut down the iPod from the Rockbox firmware?
I don't know, but my iPod Nano doesn't start up when you insert the charger and it was completely off (not on sleeping mode of the original firmware). Perhaps the iPod Videos are different, but I was under the impression that the way power management reacts was similar on all iPods.

What Nano are you talking about...

The Nano1G will boot Rockbox as soon as power is detected on the dock and start charging, The Nano2G will do nothing at all, it needs to be booted when it's connected, or it won't do a thing.

As Rockbox doesn't support any other Nano...I find this odd, to say the least.
(Tested with two Nano1Gs, and three Nano2G running r29906 with both USB power and AC charger.)

There's a lot of misinformation in this thread. To make this clear:

The Ipods do *not* support charging when turned off. It's that simple. This is a hardware issue and not related to Rockbox -- the Apple firmware also turns the Ipod on when charging (in fact the Apple firmware doesn't turn off the Ipod at all, it just shuts down the display). Therefore the Ipod *cannot* turn off after charging has finished if AC is still connected.

Furthermore, when the Ipod is charged but still connected to AC power it will *not* drain the battery. I leave my Ipod charging from a wall charger over night at times, and when I disconnect it in the morning it's still completely charged.

Last, since charging with shut down hardware is not possible plugging in power (or USB) will *always* power up (and thus boot) the Ipod. This is a hardware issue and nothing Rockbox can do anything about.

(I'm not completely sure about this on Nano2G and later Ipods but it's definitely true for older Ipods. Since the original question was about an Ipod Video this applies. Also, there are players that support charging while turned off because the charging is controlled by hardware and not by software. This doesn't apply to most players though.)

Sorry for the misinformation, I thought iPod Videos and 2G Nanos were around the same age. My iPod does charge when turned off, both in AC and USB, and does not turn on if I connect the USB or AC when it is turned off. In fact, even if I tell Rockbox to not allow charging on USB connections, it still charges, so you must be correct, the charging is handled through hardware.

There is a major difference between the older Ipods (up to Video 5.5G and Nano 1G) and the newer ones (starting with Nano 2G and Ipod Classic): they have completely different hardware. The older ones use a PortalPlayer CPU and for those the things I've said about charging is true (i.e. they need to be powered up when charging). I don't know if the newer ones handle charging in hardware (honestly, I would be surprised but I can imagine that being handles by some Apple firmware part we don't need to care about).
