Installation
« on: February 18, 2006, 10:10:17 AM »
Sorry, rather n00bish question...
So I'm trying to put Rockbox on my 5th gen and the tutorial it gives there is not so great...

It says:

Type the following command to extract Apple's firmware from the bootpartition.bin image file:

ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin

I do that and command prompt gives me Code:
'ipod_fw' is not recogonized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Can anyone help me?

your ipod has to be plugged in, and replace:

ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin

with:

ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e N bootpartition.bin

(N is the ipods drive number)....i too had trouble, but i found this out.

I don't know if that's correct.

When I did my install, my ipiod was number 2, and I copied every command verbatim except for the ones that had N in the lines, where I replaced that with 2.

The bootpartition.bin line doesn't have the N, meaning it's not meant to be replaced.

And the error he's getting sounds more like he's trying to run the command from somewhere other than the directory where he downloaded all the ipod tools.

"ipod_fw' is not recogonized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. "

I don't believe you should change that to N.  What would that even do?  You're just merging the bin files.  I don't even think the Ipod has to be plugged in at the time.

You need to download the "ipod_fw" program to whatever directory you're attempting to install rockbox from.  I believe the wiki suggusts "c:\rockbox", so you would download the program and then cd to that folder to run it.
