Think of two scenarios:

1. Lectures, inside, quiet speaker
hi gain

2. in the street - notes taken whenever you come accross something important in your recorded lectures
lo gain

Whenever you leave a lecture, you have to remember to reduce the rec gain before putting cans on - or you'll be attacked by street noise, when trying to take a note.
