Rockbox is not recognized by my car audio system
« on: May 12, 2011, 01:11:06 PM »
Hi
My car audio system was installed almost ten years ago. My head unit is Alpine CDA 9815. I had iPod link box installed for my head unit and the head unit recognize iPod as a changer. Yesterday I installed Rockbox into my iPod and now when I connect iPod to my system, it show error message on the head unit and then the head unit shut off.
I think Rockbox is not compatible with the Alpine iPod link box that I have. Any way to fix this issue?
Thanks.

If your head unit expects to talk to the ipod over the Apple usb protocol you'll have to wait until someone adds support for it.

it is not the USB. My head unit does not have the USB. This one came along before the USB. But I bought a box unit from Alpine. (I will look at the manual to see what connection it uses.) I had it installed by the shop. The put the box under the dash board. I will get back to you on that.
Thanks.

Hi again
The iPod unit connector is called Alpine KCA-420i and it is connected through Ai-Net connection. Below is the description of the KCA-420i :

"Forget about fumbling around with your iPod controls to change songs or albums while driving. Now, you can connect your iPod to a compatible 2004 Alpine in-dash receiver with Ai-Net connections (see below), and control all the functions right from the receiver! (Note: the adapter is compatible with all iPod and iPod mini models equipped with a dock connector and iPod software update 2004-04-28, or higher. )

The KCA-420i package includes a compact adapter module and two cables. Mount the adapter module in a hidden location in your vehicle, then connect one cable from the module to your Alpine receiver, and the second cable from the module to your iPod. Once connected, you can control virtually all iPod playback functions from your compatible Alpine receiver, including search (playlist, artist, album), track preview, and shuffle play (playlist, all tracks).

Alpine's Quick Search keys offer quick and easy navigation through your iPod's music menu, and you can set your receiver's Bass Engine controls to maximize the sound quality of your iPod tunes. And, best of all, the KCA-420i module automatically charges your iPod's internal battery as you drive."

Given its age, its most likely a serial based connection.  Theres been a lot of improvements lately to our serial protocol.  I'd try a new build every couple months and see if anything has improved.
