Rockbox for Archos 5/48?
Hotobu:
Hi I did a search for this, but since 5 and 48 are too small to search on I didn't get good results.
Anyway I'm wondering if there's a Rockbox for the Archos 5/48. Please excuse me if this is a stupid question, but I see that there's an Android version in development. Is the only version of Rockbox that can work on one of these devices an Android one, or is there a version that can be run without it i.e. a dual boot type thing.
The primary reason I care is because apparently even though these devices have 500gb HDs there's around a 37,500 file limit (approximately 200Gigs) for id3 tagging. That's such a waste. I want the space and the ability to navigate a full HD of music. It seems like Rockbox is my best alternative.

Yes, the only version of Rockbox you will run on this device (presently at least, probably ever) is the Android one.
Rockbox for Android is not a full firmware replacement, it's an application that runs on the Android platform.
No dual-boot needed.
And Rockbox does it's own database and filebrowser...so (although I am not confident, absolutely) I doubt Rockbox cares about any artificial limits imposed by the OS.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'm just going to go ahead and order the Archos 48, and send back what I like least between it and the Cowan 7
Is it true that Rockbox for Android is up and running fine now? I can't remember the dates on the posts I searched on, but I seem to remember it being in development.
...still though if it'll break the file limit... oh boy.

Depends on what you call "running fine". It runs, it plays back music and it has various issues. You can use it for playback if you don't mind the current problems. Depending on the phone there are issues that affect playback. Plus, there are no official builds available so you need to build it yourself or get someone to do it for you.

Hmm... that's going to be a bit of a problem then, but I'll try my best. Software isn't my strongsuit, but I'll do what I can to effectively double the capacity of my player if that's what can be done. I guess I should head to the development forums then...ugh.
