Power off when not idle
« on: May 11, 2011, 11:03:25 AM »
Hi,
I'm still a newbie, so sorry if this has been already discussed, but how about an option to power off RockBox when no buttons have been touched for, say 2 hours.

I have sometimes left my Sansa Clip+ playing, headphones out, only for it to die 12 hours later having emptied the battery.  How about a auto-power-off option.  It should be disabled in party mode.

Jim.

Have you looked at the sleep timer?

There are a few patches that deal with persistent sleep timers.

This one looks promising.

Sleep timer might do it, but with 2 possible drawbacks: According to the manual, the sleep timer is reset on every boot, and I am not sure the sleep timer is reset when any key is pressed.

Yes, you will need to manually set the sleep timer. Wanting the player to stop playback after X hours of playing if, and only if, users don't touch keys (something many people may not even do during many hours of playing) is a somewhat obscure requirement, and probably not likely to go in on its own.

Fair enough. I just thought of it when I was on holiday and accidentally flattened the battery with no recharge point available.  Annoying, but it probably won' t happen again.

The trick is, if you're intentionally using it, it'll turn off the player when you don't want it to. If you turn it off, then you need to remember to turn it back on for the other cases. If you can remember to turn it on, you could also just use the sleep timer.

I just patched a clip+ release r29823M-110511 with this patch and it works well. The sleep timer can be persistently enabled via the settings menu.

Settings -> General -> System -> Sleep timer

I also disabled the pitch key-click in this build.

Thanks for this!!  Much appreciated and saved me from re-compiling myself.
Looking forward to seeing one of these patches in an upcoming release.
