missing files on default ui/winamp.
« on: May 08, 2011, 01:31:31 AM »
sorry if this has been asked before, i searched around a bit and could not find anything so i decided to create a new thread.

i have rockbox installed on my 5.5gen ipod video 80gb.

i recently installed rockbox a few weeks ago and everything was fine for a while. but recently today, i plugged my ipod into my pc and loaded up winamp to listen to some music, and within winamp, only 11 artists  and about 300 tracks showed up on my ipod from within winamp (my ipod normally has 11,000 songs and only about 4 gb free space)

i unplugged it and scrolled through all my music and it was all still there, and played just fine. i restarted my ipod and loaded up the default apple ui, and lo and behold the same results as winamp showed, only 11 artists, and about 100 songs. my playlists are still intact through winamp (although on the apple ui it leaves them out if they don't include any of the showing 300 showing songs.)

does anyone know whats going on? i'd really like to know whats going on :/

here is a screenshot, you can clearly see near the bottom that it says 322 items, but only 4.11gb available

Consult the Winamp developers. We can't provide bug fixes for their programs.

Odds are good it's just looking at the iTunes database on your player, rather than all music present. That is, treating it like a normal iPod, not a Rockboxed iPod.

can you guys just ignore the part about winamp then? the OFW vs rockbox question would still apply, and if you cant i can edit my post i guess. like i said everything worked fine for a couple weeks until this problem recently popped up today.

Do your files show up in Rockbox?

yeah like i said in my original post, everything appears fine from within the rockbox firmware, and all play correctly. it's not until i revert back to OFW or winamp (that appears to read off of OFW) that the files appear missing.

So the problem isn't in Rockbox. We can't fix the original firmware's issues either. It will only show you songs you've synced with iTunes or something that generates the iTunes database.

i don't think that saying the problem isn't rockbox just because rockbox generates the correct library is a fair assessment. i'm not blaming it on anything in particular, but i've had this specific ipod for many years and it has just recently had this problem after installing rockbox; so to say rockbox had nothing to do with this (especially with what little info i've given) would be a pretty bold statement.

Rockbox doesn't care about the iTunes database. The original firmware and apparently Winamp do. Your problem is with the iTunes database which neither is generated nor modified by Rockbox. Rockbox itself is working fine, the files are showing up in it.

Which part of the problem seems to have anything to do with Rockbox? Did you sync those files by dragging them onto the player, or via iTunes?

some of them were synced years and years ago via itunes, but when i found ml_ipod i started using winamp instead just because i hate itunes and apple in general. is there some player or extension that can read the files through rockbox instead of through the apparent apple firmware? i'm thinking when rockbox populated its library after initial installation, it may have messed with the original database paths, or the new database that was written specifically for rockbox may have interfered with the original database.

As I said, Rockbox does not write to or modify the original database. It doesn't move any of the music either. There's no reason to think it might have - there's no code that even points to the database, it doesn't know it exists. It works the same on the iPod as it does on other players, it scans the drive for music and then creates a list of where this music is for its own use not touching anything already there. The problem you're having most likely relates to ml_ipod and the way it interacts with the original firmware.

Any player that can simply play files off of a USB drive should be happy to play files off of a Rockbox'd iPod as long as it's willing to treat it like a USB drive.

i'd be inclined to believe that it could be ml_ipod but i've been using the same winamp/ml_ipod version combo for over a year with no problems. i could also be leaning towards a hardware problem, but i think if there was some sort of hardware malfunction involving missing/invisible database files, that rockbox would also reflect the same problem. i take it rockbox doesn't have any feature to like backwards write a database to the apple firmware?

so if (though i'm not convinced yet) this ends up not being a rockbox issue, would any of you guys have any suggestions or guesses as to what's up?

edit: when i asked for a media player able to read/play files from rockbox, i meant reading from the database/playlists, not having to search through the crappy hidden folders and obscurely named tracks that are normally created haha.

If it's a problem with ml_ipod you shouldn't be seeking help here.

Since it's a problem in the Apple firmware, remove Rockbox and see if the problem persists. Then reinstall Rockbox, remove all the music, then re-sync it. If the situation is different with and without Rockbox then there's something to investigate. If there's not, then it's a problem you should seek help with elsewhere.

But rather than assuming it's Rockbox, the first thing to do is do some tests to see what happens. You'd need the results of those to find an answer anyway, whether or not it's Rockbox.

i don't have access to all my music off of the ipod so i'd rather use that as a last resort; like i said it's been added to the ipod over many years. like i said i'm not specifically suggesting rockbox as the culprit, i just came here because i recently installed it and then encountered the problem, so it's only logical to come here for help first. i'll do a few simple tests and tweaks to see what i can come up with in the morning, i'll save the removing and reinstallation of firmwares for later on as well.

Did you update the original firmware before installing Rockbox?

I have no idea why you're asking for help with the Apple firmware here, but its:

a)  Unlikely to get you much help since hardly anyone here uses the ipod firmware
b)  Off topic since these are the rockbox forums

I suggest asking the ml_ipod people for support, or just rebuilding the iPod's database from the files on your player.
