Sansa Fuze stuck on "refreshing your media" when booting in OF
« on: May 05, 2011, 08:15:27 PM »
Hello,

I have used rockbox on a Sansa Fuze v2 for a week or so and everything was going fine until yesterday. Since then when I try to start the OF it displays "refreshing your media" and gets stuck at some point during this. If I plug it into USB it will start in MSC mode so I can still transfer files. The only drawback is that if a SD card is present when plugged in it will try (and fail) to refresh the media so I cannot transfer files on the SD card using the Sansa.

I read on the Internet that this could be due to a file with bad tags so I removed everything in the main memory except for the .rockbox directory and a few files in  the root directory. It still hangs when starting the OF.

What should I do from this point?
What files can I remove without preventing Rockbox to start?
What happens if I remove evrything from the player including the .rockbox directory?

I found this interesting topic http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/Main/SansaAMS#Formatting_a_Player_that_cannot_get_past_the_Database_Refresh_in_the_OF while researching a little bit more.

I am just wondering what will happen if I do format the device. Will rockbox get removed during the process? Will rockbox loader get removed? Will I still be able to boot at least in the OF so I can reinstall Rockbox?

Strange.  Those folders have nothing to do with Rockbox and (as far as I know) should remain empty if you keep your player in MSC and transfer files elsewhere.

Would Windows Media Player or Amarok be the culprit and have transferred some music there?

I believe those have something to do with MTP mode in the original firmware.  What is the setting in the original firmware for USB mode?

No that you mention it I shortly played with MTP in the OF because amarok would not detected the main memory of the Fuze as a device to transfer music to.

Amarok should detect your player in MSC mode these days.  I sometimes use it to sync to my Rockbox players.

There were quite a few versions of Amarok2 that supported MTP but not MSC.  Your experience was probably with one of those (older) versions.

I found that holding the power down for about thirty seconds will force you sandisk player to shut down. Once your device is off, plug it into a computer. I am not sure what happened to mine but after going through all of the folders on the sandisk (in mass storage mode because I was using Ubuntu at the time and there's no driver for Ubuntu) and safely ejecting the device, it came back and completed the refreshing faze. I hope this works for you.
