Gigabeat F40 needs battery switch cycle after powering down

Hi, I've been using Rockbox for... 3 years now? On my Gigabeat and a few Sansa e and c series. After tweaking my Gigabeat rockbox install, getting some mods and themes and stuff and being happy with it for the last 2 years, and then the album art not working last year, I figured it was time to update Rockbox and get album art and other stuff working again.

So I recently tried using the Rockbox utility to upgrade it, and kept getting corrupted packages. Tried downloading them manually... same thing. Downloaded them manually from another computer/network, they worked fine (don't usually have a problem at all with other downloads).

Backed up /.rockbox, manually dropped in the new version, overwriting the old, and ran into some problems. Deleted the .rockbox dir and dropped in the files fresh, it worked fine and everything looks good, except

TL;DR:

one largely annoying problem: whenever I power it down, it now says "Shutting down..." and fades out (whereas before the screen would just turn off instead of fading.) The power button will not power it back up without turning the battery switch off, and back on again. Then it has to spend 20 seconds or so loading the original gigabeat bootloader, then it loads Rockbox and works as usual.

I *thought* I saw something about this when I was sniffing around and updating it recently, but I can't find anything on it when searching today.
Ideas?

Not sure. When powering up, if I'm holding the Menu button, after the original Gigabeat loader is finished, it looks like it shows what could possibly be some of the bootloader info for a second before the RB splash displays, but I've tried about 10 times to catch any useful info... all I can make out looks kind of like the last release RB FW I was using, "bleeding 071915". I don't remember if I installed the RB loader as single-boot originally, but the OF doesn't boot if I flip the Hold on after powerup.

Beastpatcher doesn't recognize the player as connected, either connecting normally or holding Menu and connecting. Feel like I'm missing something, some step to try...

You could check the size and date of your FWIMG01.DAT file and compare it to the bootloader version here:

http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/gigabeat/

BTW, there are not 19 months in a year, so I'm guessing that date isn't right ;)

You installed it as single boot, since you can't dual boot on the Gigabeat F.f

It sounds like you're reading the instructions for the wrong player if you're running beastpatcher.  It won't work with the Gigabeat F.  I'd go back, read the install directions, and then install the latest bootloader and rockbox build.  Checking the disk for errors wouldn't hurt either just in case theres some file corruption.

Yeah, I thought it was supposed to be a date also but I still didn't manage to catch it. It looked peculiar... and I think I confused the Gigabeat with the dual-booting of my old Sansa e250. :( ... and I must've been on the Gigabeat X or S docs to try using Beastpatcher. VAN DAMME.

It was the bootloader, mine was 49K and from 09/2007 as opposed to the current one of 52k and 2008. Dropped the newer one in, it turns off and back on again from the button like a champ. Thanks for the hand holding!
