Ipod Video 30gb (5th gen) - FLAC files skipping, pausing, etc.
« on: April 28, 2011, 04:47:08 PM »
I've just installed Rockbox 3.8.1 on a 5th Gen Ipod Video 30gb

I've uploaded ONE folder of FLAC files

The songs play for 3 seconds, pause for 2, plays for 3, etc.

The ipod was restored prior to install.

I have tried the Cabbie Theme and the Terminal Theme.

I have tried resetting the initializing, updating, and auto updating the database.

No changes with anything above.

To be sure it wasn't a hardware issue, I booted into the Apple Interface and loaded an .mp3 file (not a FLAC because it won't support it) and there was no skipping.  I also played the FLAC on the PC to be sure it wasn't the file itself.

So... I'm not sure if this is a setting issue with Rockbox.  A software glitch, or an issue with playing FLAC files.

Any advice?

It does sound like can't decode the file fast enough. Two things to look at:

  • Have you enabled lots of sound processing (equalizer, dithering, crossfeed or similasr)? If so, try disabling that.
  • What kind of FLAC files are you playing? Sample frequency and bit depth are of interest. A high sample frequency is probably expensive to decode (and is actually bad for quality in this case, as Rockbox downsamples that to 44.1 kHz using a fast but low quality resampler).

I have a similar problem though i tihnk mine is related to filesystem corruption. I have a few FLAC folders, *one* of them will play untill the buffer empties and then stall for maybe 5s or so waiting for the disc to spin up and it to start decoding. I've only noticed it on one folder and had no time to find out what the issue is (and yeah, im prety sure the disk is dead anway)

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

I had this same problem with iPod video 80gig and Rockbox 3.9.1.

FLAC files skipping to the next song, some getting skipped entirely etc.

Downsampling all lossless files to 16/44.1 helped some of the files but what solved the problem was wiping the ipod down, restoring from iTunes (without synching mp3, aac files), reinstalling Rockbox, and loading only my FLAC files back on. Plays perfectly now.

I'm convinced this issue is caused by iPod hardware limitations.

What samplerate and bitdepth were they at?
