file browser complaints (not me, it.)

I've looked in the faq, wiki and dones a few searches for similar problems but i can't figure out whether having all my music files in the base directory, just H:\song.mp3, is a bad idea. I'm starting to think it is now as everytime I try to increase the max file browser amount of files it'l show, from 1000 to 2300 or similar it crashes, if not instantly, when you try to use the file browser.
so.. Will I have to reload my music back onto the ipod using a few directories? if so, what's the ideal amount? what does keeping the file view amount down affect?

I don't know how changing the max files setting would crash your player.  You'd have to give a lot more info before anyone is going to be able to offer you advice.

Okay, well I'm unsure what other info a prospective advisor would need, so I'm going to set about getting some info that seems relevant to me.

Well, I hate to be the one crying wolf buuut it seems to have accepted a 1000+ file limit now, only after it was set to 2200 without trying the file browser straight after, then restarted.
It was sticking on 50 files visable (after bumping the limit down in stages to see if/when the dir buffer full msg went away, before i read faq again and realised this was pointless) whatever i changed the setting to while "live updating".

The error+crash started after charging the ipod via wall charger for 15-20 mins, battery ting said 98%~. I loaded some audiobooks into the hd last night and on todays morning car journey i realised that the audiobooks folder had not appeared in file browser, this was when i found the limits bit in settings. Straight after bumping the limit up, it crashed. After I restarted the battery levels were going haywire, from 18% to 9% and buzzing about under 9, it also carried on crashing either as soon as the limit was changed or when opening file browser straight after changing limit.

So that's the crashes in more detail, could the battery level indicator have lied after i took it out of the wall charger and the actual power levels being low affected the ram in some way or w/e?
It lasted 3~ hours which ain't bad for sub-10% battery. It has a replacement battery and I did set the right amps for the battery level indicator. unless 550 amps is the stock and the settings have been lost.

Personally, I prefer not having all files in one. Other than being hard to find the right track, the file system isn't very efficient in handling large directories (not a problem if you use the directory cache though).

Regardless, having a limit lower than the number of files in a directory, or changing that setting, shouldn't cause crashes, but it is possible a bug has crept in there. (E.g., a couple of years ago, a big enough file count limit caused ugly memory corruptions...)

well I remembered something else, the file broswer crashes didn't start first. First I tried fixing my problem by updating the database and while that was happening i tried playing all files on the ipod through databse section. then it crashed. that started them maybe? obviously if that is the reason then it's my fault for overloading it.

anyway thanks for the replys if it pops up again ill look into bug reports.

No, "overloading" things is not your fault. Rockbox is designed to handle things well no matter how big they are (even if it isn't entirely true sometimes), and if Rockbox has crashed for "overloading" it, it should be a bug, not your fault (unless it says somewhere that what you did is indeed overloading the system, and this is not the case)
