Installing cygwin subversion?
« on: April 27, 2011, 05:03:38 AM »
Hi, I have already subversion running on my virtualbox vm so I am uncertain if I should skip the subversion from the cygwin installer. Is it just an interface to the svn server or the server itself?

It's a client for subversion, not a server. If you're using the VMware image you don't need svn in Cygwin - but in that case you don't need Cygwin at all anyway.

I am running a win7 32bit guest dev system, so cygwin. I have subversion already installed from the apache foundation for my other projects this is why I am unsure of what the svn in the cygwin installer is for.

But you say it's a client so I guess I don't need it as I already have a client installed, correct?

Another way to ask, at what point do I know if I need it? Checkout?

You can type SVN at the command line.  If it works, you're good to go.

FWIW, running cygwin is generally a bad idea.  Running Cygwin inside a VM makes even less sense.  Just download a ubuntu virtualbox image from source forge.

Many have told me that but I have my reasons and all seems to depend on how often I am going to compile. I haven't yet done one yet so don't know the compile time but if it becomes a hassle I will move to a linux environment but for now this was faster for me to set up since I already have a dev vm running.

Setting up an ubuntu image is so much faster then trying to setup cygwin you probably could have already done it several times over.

for now this was faster for me to set up since I already have a dev vm running.

- download a prebuild ubuntu / whateverlinuxdistroyoulike VM
- import it in VMware / VirtualBox
- start it
- run rockboxdev.sh to build the toolchain
- checkout Rockbox sources and you're ready to go

Way simpler and faster than using Cygwin. Besides, most information on the Rockbox website assumes you're using Linux, so it's just ... easier.

There's also a difference between using a Windows svn client and a Cygwin one: subversion does line ending translation (depending on file properties). I don't know how svn in Cygwin 1.7 behaves but I assume that uses Unix line endings while Windows uses DOS. This can lead to problems so when running Cygwin I'd always prefer using the native (as in environment native, not host OS native) client.

Ok 'nuf with the "this is how you get a linus dev vm"! I know already, respect that I don't need another vm at this point for christ sake.

If you don't want advice why are you asking at all? If you can't stand people giving you some advice you don't like why are you asking in the first time? If you dismiss peoples advice this way do you expect getting support in the future?

If the guy wants to wait for cygwin to finish compiling while a virtualbox/ubuntu system is done three times over let him  ::)

bluebrother, I had been given that advice by saratoga and commented on it and still you feel the need to push that same advice once more- the same thing happened on irc by others. If you take it personally that is your thing, it is not intended to be so. Please exhibit some professional courtesy and as I said respect my point of view.

This has nothing to do with not wanting advice. The topic was regarding subversion from the cygwin installer, not whether to run a windows or linux dev environment so the advices are off-topic. And as I said at this time I don't feel a need to go for two dev vm's and if cygwin becomes a hassle I will install a linux vm.

Well, not after you commented on it. You commented on it after I added another comment (which, by the way, also includes a hint about the differences for subversion clients on different platforms, but it seems that is unimportant. I even verified how svn behaves on Cygwin 1.7 in the meantime but well, doesn't seem to be interesting at all). I also detailed in setting up a Linux VM since you were claiming things that are simply wrong -- installing things on Cygwin is simply not faster than installing a Linux VM, especially since you have to build the compilers yourself. So claiming that I "pushed that same advice once more" is simply inadequate.

That's not my fault. But have you considered that the way you want to go might be a really bad idea since so many people -- according to what you said -- tell you this?

"For christs sake" and your tone is "professional courtesy"? Well, not to my understanding. I you expect me to show "professional courtesy" shouldn't I expect it from you as well? Is this you're showing respecting my point of view?

Anyway, I'm out of this discussion.

It is inappropriate to call people unprofessional because you disagree with the advice they've given you.

FWIW if you want help, next time I suggest reconsidering your approach to dealing with people.
