Broken hold switch.
(1/1)
Darrky:
Hello, real quick question. I got a ipod mini 2nd gen with a broken hold switch. Before I go and start diddling around with my solder iron would it be possible to disable the button with a rockbox build?
gbl08ma:
I think so, but you must compile Rockbox yourself so you can make the necessary modifications in code. Also, if the mini is like other iPods, having the hold on at startup will boot into Apple firmware, so you'd need to modify the bootloader too.
I'd say it is much easier to remove the switch with a solder iron.
LambdaCalculus:
The hold switch on iPod minis is on the logic board itself. Repairing it is quite tricky, and you run the risk of destroying the logic board if you're not careful.
If you want to see how to fix your iPod mini, there are instructions here:

When examining my 5th gen iPod, I found that the hold switch seems to disable some hardware. Registers which should show button and wheel info stop working when hold is enabled. If your Mini is like that, a software solution might not be possible.
