Yes. You only need to use dd and fdisk, so any Linux distro should work even if running from a pendrive (the only major difference in pendrives is the persistency filesystem which doesn't matter in any way here).
Make sure you know what device your player gets recognized as when connecting it, should you end up dd'ing your hard drive (which is almost like formatting it)! If you could, I'd suggest that you take all the pendrives out and even the hard disk, as you only need the pendrive to run Ubuntu

(BTW, if you carefully look at the list fdisk returns and search for the partition mentioned in the wiki, you won't end up dd'ing anything you shouldn't. But take care anyways
