Thanks for responding quickly. I upgraded the iHiver's own firmware to 1.66 (it was 1.63) and then used the Rockbox utility to do a full install. I have removed the installation and repeated a few times, in both PC and Mac environments. Everything seems to work but the device still boots as an iRiver.
I supplied the firmware (1.66 and 1.65E) from iRiver's site and from the Rockbox mirror site
Going back to version 1.65E - made no difference.
Do I need to go back to an earlier version of the firmware? I'm assuming that the Rockbox utility does the necessary modification to the original firmware file. I think I see something of that effect as it scrolls through the actions.

I sussed it - the firmware does not load if there is already a hex file already on the drive, and the upgrade only works if you are upping the version number.
The solution was to upgrade iRiver to 1.65, remove the 1.65 v hex file, then use the 1.66 hex file through the installer and lastly - since familiarity breeds contempt - remember to do the firmware upgrade at the end.
many thanks
