IPOD 3g: Battery Empty message when full

When I start rockbox recently I get the message

Battery Empty! RECHARGE! Shutting down ....

This problem seems to have come up over the last month. The battery status reports that it is full and if I start Rockbox when the ipod is docked and then remove it, it will work normally until I reboot again. Checking the status in native firmware (ipod) it is charged and boots normally.

The battery status shows:

Status 3.955
battery level 100%

The version of Rockbox is 3.8.1
