MOD Playlist shows (ERR) for multiple file types
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:31:13 PM »
I've searched the forums, the patches, and any reported bugs for anything like this, however, I wasn't able to find anything at the moment.  Please forgive me if this is a repost.

To begin, I own a Sansa Clip+ 4GB.  I have use the RockBoxUtility to install both 3.8.1 and the latest RockBox version on it (as of this post, 29744), but both have the same problem.

I have several playlists that combine MP3 and MOD files and these work just fine.  The MP3 files play perfectly and the MOD files display properly but the playtime is off (the skin may show that it only took 2.5 minutes to play a MOD but in actuality it took 5+ minutes).  I don't mind this, in fact, I'm thrilled my player even supports native MOD format.  However, I have another playlist containing 100+ files that are mixed MOD/S3M/XM/IT/MTM that is having some issues.

First, I am using WinAMP to make the playlist and sync.  The m3u file on the Sansa is stored to a 'Playlists' directory and examining the contents appears correct.  When I reboot the device and navigate to Files->Playlists->MODs, it will ONLY play the files with a MOD extention.  When I view the playlist using the submenu button, it shows that all of the other files that are of differing file types (XM, S3M, etc) have a (ERR) in front of the filename.

When I navigate out to root directory where these files are located, I can, of course, play the files individually, but I've noticed something strange.  The MOD files will play with the skin I've selected - not only that, they can be paused, play in the background, etc.  However, the XM, S3M, and any files in an "other" format will open with mikmod directly, it does NOT use the skin I've selected to play the file, AND, the file is not successfully played in the background.  Instead, when I try to exit playing the file, it goes to a 'Mikmod Main Menu' with a few selections I can make and the sound seems to loop over the last second it has played.

I've checked my viewers.config file and it clearly shows all of the filetypes I need to be opened in mikmod.rock (as I expect), but why doesn't this work as a playlist?

Plugins can't use the playlist system, only codecs, so if you're using a format that requires a plugin for decoding it won't work in a playlist.

I don't know much about mod, but apparently it has various issues that prevent it from being integrated into the normal playback system (much like MIDI).

MOD is the only mod format currently supported by a codec and usable in a playlist.  The other mod formats will show up in file browser because they are supported by the Mikmod plugin.

The Mikmod plugin has its own internal playlist mechanism and will attempt to play all presumably readable mod files located within the same directory as the file which invoked it.

Ok, thank you for your prompt answer.  This makes perfect sense to me.  I'll go ahead and grab the code out of SVN, see what the MOD codec looks like, and do what I can on my own.
