I also had "this would make the EQ UI crazy complicated" as first reaction, but on 2nd thought there is a simple and elegant solution. All that is needed (UI-wise) is a simple menu where EQ presets can be assigned to channels. This way the fairly complex EQ UI wouldn't need to be changed at all.

Yeah I think that could be made to work. But then again few people would want it so I don't know if anyone would care enough to implement it.

You have a pretty weird idea of simple, from my perspective.
The sane solution, as I see it, would be to double up on the settings entries and have one each for left and right (this is actually rather simple to achieve, too). Having individual presets for each channel (which is a terrible idea, if you ask me) is messy, there's no need to split the presets into their respective channels.
Regardless how sane or non-sane the UI for this is, I think it is rather unlikely to make it in - it is a rather obscure use case which allows people that don't know what they are doing to potentially double the CPU usage of the EQ which virtually no one understands how to use correctly in the first place.

As a stop-gap for users suffering auditory defects might I suggest a global EQ correction be applied to the copy of your music files on your portable player through the use of a tool like Foobar2000?
