3.8 update broken on 5th gen ipod video

Chauncellor:
Hi, there, been using rockbox for a long while and it's always been smooth. Since I upgraded to 3.8, however, it's been a mess on my ipod. I've been having random freezes and errors. For instance, 9/10 times I boot I am presented with the error:

--- Code: ---Data abort at 00000008 (0)
--- End code ---

and last night was presented with an error message along the lines of:

--- Code: ---cannot find linux.bin
--- End code ---

I have used ipodpatcher to remove the bootloader, deleted the .rockbox directory and started again with the latest version of the rockbox installer for 64-bit linux. The ipod worked fine last night but the errors flared up again. First the RB splash will appear, then "Scanning Disk" will appear for a few seconds before shooting the Data Abort error again.

I have booted into the diagnostics utility for the ipod and viewed the SMART data:

--- Code: ---Retracts:64
Reallocs:0
Pending sectors:0
PowerOn Hours:1184
Start/Stops:9428

--- End code ---

I still have not attempted downgrade but will try going back to 3.7 soon. I have not tried reformatting as I don't have direct access to a windows machine/itunes and libparted cannot handle the cylinder size that an ipod has.

Are these the signs of a failing HDD? I can boot into the Apple firmware fine but I can't do anything with it as I don't have any sync set up.

Also, if these are bugs with 3.8 how would I go about effectively reporting them? All I have are some error messages.

Thank you.

I would check the file system for errors and then update to the current build.

This one means you pressed play while the player was booting, so the bootloader tried to boot ipodlinux. That's not a bug. ;)

Chauncellor:
Found a Windows machine and reformatted (there goes 80 gigs I have to resync once this is done...).

I'm going to hold off on the going to unstable builds. I'm very selective of what I want to break/test and my music player is not one of them. If anything I will downgrade. So far the install has been working okay (synced only 500 MB of music/stuff I need) and I'll report back if it was indeed file system corruption.

e2fsck kept coming up with errors but it's always seemed to be unreliable with the ipod. I used chkdsk with windows and it did report a problem with the first, small partition. Gave nothing of value telling me what was wrong and it didn't fix it, but I went ahead and just started from scratch.

Thanks for the help.

Ah, yes, the arbitrary commands that can be issued to these devices on bootup are infinite, it seems.

The current build is probably more stable then the release, but going back to 3.7.1 might work well enough too.
