Best Rockbox Player/Sound quality

(1/1)

h.finn:
Hi everybody.
Last year I bought a 5.5 gen iPod Video to be used with Rockbox, having my 6 years old Mini run out of memory.
Last week the Mini has basically died and, not wanting to repair it once more, I was looking for a suitable device to be used with Rockbox.
What I'm after is only good sound quality output.
I'm aware of the good quality of the 5.5gen iPod Wolfson Dac but, if there is something better, I'm prepared to give up on the ease of use and good looks of an iPod for another device.
I've been searching the forum but I can't find related topics and on http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/BuyersGuide I can't see any Best Sound quality feature.
I have to say here that I've come to realize that, soundwise, the Mini is actually inferior to the 5.5 gen one.

Any suggestion would be welcomed!

Many many thanks,
H.
P.S.: I forgot to say that I use the iPod only through line out dock and with a home stereo system.

If you just want line out, then no what you have is as good as it gets.

h.finn:
Hi Saratoga,
And thanks!
I mentioned line out because, being an iPod, I prefer this to the earphone one.
But I noticed that you suggested the iriver H100 series (H120/H140) to somebody asking about a device with S/PDIF.
Do you think that this option would carry the signal better than an iPod line out (I guess with the iriver an added advantage would be the possibility of using an external DAC).

Thanks again.
H.

Chronon:
S/PDIF is digital, so the data should be perfectly preserved until it is decoded by a downstream DAC.  It is both an advantage that you can use a high quality DAC and a requirement that you must use some other DAC.
