iriver H140 installation

<< < (2/3) > >>

Llorean:
Again, I don't have enough information to help you. Just saying "the bootloader is where I'm having problems" doesn't tell me what you've done or tried to do.

Please, be very clear about exactly what you do in trying the bootloader installation.

heath789:
OK I will do it step by step . Thanks
1,2,3 are as before
4. select device ihp 140
5.select complete installation.
6.small window comes up "prerequisites bootloader installation " I click on "iriverBoot" highlighted in blue and a new window opens "The iriver Rockbox Bootloader"" This is the page ;    http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IriverBoot#Download_and_extract_a_recent_ve"
7. I go to this page " http://rasher.dk/rockbox/iriver-firmwares/" to get the  iriver firmware .
I get this version" H120/H140   1.66   US   H120(US)-v166.zip and double click on it to unzip it and save it to the desk to then go back .
8.These are the steps I did next ;
1. Download the firmware patch er fwpatcher.exe from http://download.rockbox.org/
bootloader/iriver/ and save it to your desktop.

2. Go to your desktop and double-click on the firmware patch er.
3. In the firmware patch er dialog box, click on the Browse button and navigate to
the .hex le that you previously downloaded.
4. Click Patch. The firmware patch er will patch the original firmware to include the
Rockbox bootloader. The .hex le on your desktop is now a modied version of
the original .hex le.
When I do this last step I get an error message saying : could not modify existing file. Check if file is write protecetd , then try again.
and here I can not go any further
Thanks for your patience .

Llorean:
Are you sure you actually unzipped it?

As I said, I asked you to describe in your own words exactly what you do and click on. You've just copied and pasted text here. Saying "I did what they said and it didn't work" isn't the same as describing in your words exactly what you click on, what files are named, what pops up, etc, so I can see where something wrong is happening.

Right now all I can say is "it works if you do it right, and I still don't know what you've done exactly, so can't offer any more advice." I understand you're frustrated and apparently have been trying this for months, but please take the time to type out what I've asked or I really can't do more than try to guess this or that.

My guess is that the file you're pointing fwpatcher to isn't the unzipped original .hex file. I'm also pretty sure that rbutil can patch the .hex file now too, if you've got the original .hex file.

heath789:
I just did it I repeated the steps and it seems to have worked , If i change drives now will I have to do all the steps again.
Also can the themes be changed as the on I have is very difficult to read.
Thanks

Llorean:
If you change drives, only the Rockbox installation will need redone. The bootloader stays installed.

Themes are covered in the manual.
