WMA Pro File Playback Bug
« on: March 20, 2011, 11:24:32 AM »
On My Sansa e280 v1, I'm having the strange symptom where files are being skipped randomly during playback, with no rhyme or reason.  Here's the vitals on one of the files (all encoded in the same fashion):

Channels 2  (stereo)
Sample Rate 44.1 KHz{CR}
Sample Size 24 bit
Bit Rate 94 kbps
Encoder Windows Media Audio 10 Professional
Encoder Settings VBR Quality 25, 44 kHz, 2 channel 24 bit 1-pass VBR
Audio Quality Medium  (Lossy)
Contains ID Tag [WMA ID Tag]
Channel Mapping

I don't experience this on Ogg Vorbis playback, and it's quite irritating to have files skipped randomly in such a fashion.  Am I the only one?  I may encode to Vorbis since it's near in quality at this bitrate and lower.

Perhaps I need to rebuild the database or reload the firmware since there are no other reports of it occurring?

Does it always happen on the same spot for the same file?

Nope, it's quite random and happens at different locations in various WMAPro files.

That will make it really hard to trouble shoot, but post one of the files.

I have a similar issue with my Sansa Clip +.

Files start to play and then part way through a track it jumps to the next one where the same is repeated and it happens with every single track that I play.

I use WMA Pro 10.

Open a bug report with a link to an example of a file that causes this bug:

I'm experiencing the same problem with wma10 pro files at all different bitrates on my Cowon D2. I've encoded from wav to wma with dbpoweramp, fre:ac and both result in files skipping to a next track at random during playback (no shuffle, no eq, everything in 'vanilla' mode). I'm using latest rockbox build but experienced the same problem in earlier builds.
It happens with vbr and cbr files and with all different combinations of channels, bitrate, stereo, mono, etc. It only happens when i've encoded into wma10pro though, the 9.2 works flawlessly.

Cheers,

Is there some way to get it to happen dependably?

I was a little too quick in that first post. There are a lot of settings I haven't tried. So I've converted a batch of sourcefiles into every possible wma10pro codec configuration I can find with two different encoding progs (still ploughing through all possible settings) Then I'll clean their tags out, put the encoder settings in the name of the folder containing the corresponding files, and test them on my d2's (int&ext mem) with the current RB build. Luckily I've got a D2 4GB and an 8GB unit. Both have a slightly different board layout so 'll assume part of the hardware is different. If so, i'll cover a little troubleshooting there too ;)

I'll put RB on default settings and start playing my batch. When I come across a file that doesn't skip to the next track i'll play it again, verify it doen't skip and check the encoder settings. If all files share the similar behaviour of random 'skip-next'-ing i've wasted a lot of time...

But before all of this I'll ask you if there's an easier way to debug this bug.

Pretty much the only way to debug the problem is to find a file the reproducibly causes the problem then trace it through the decoder to find the fault.
