Slow list scroll speed - iRiver H10
« on: March 10, 2011, 12:33:58 PM »
I set the list scroll speed acceleration to the maximum (2x/1s), but it does not scrolls very fast through the lists. I can set the delay (ms) and acceleration to everything I want, but it doesn't seem to have any influence at all. I'm using the 3.8 version of Rockbox on an iRiver H10 (20 GB). I remember that some years ago, with older versions of Rockbox, the lists scrolled ultra fast (it kept scrolling faster and faster, due to the acceleration). Is this function not longer supported anymore? Or is there something else I can do?

Thanks in advance.

Does someone know if the H10 is the only device with this problem? Are there more people having this situation?

Does it work for you with 3.7 or 3.7.1?

Edit: A h10 simulator accelerates when scrolling (only ~500 files in DB). Of course the "List Accel Start Delay" must not be set to "Off". The timeouts showed in the gui are nonsense though -- those are seconds not milliseconds. Also, the speed is not doubling each step, but increased by 1 each step.

Edit2: I have added a patch to address some issues in the implementation and the manual: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/12024

Checked on my H340... Rockbox 3.8

The acceleration does not appear to work at all. Was previously running 3.6 and it was working ok.

Cheers

Can you please check with 3.7 or 3.7.1 as well? This reduces the amount of changes which might have caused this.

Megalos, can you please check if this build works for you?

http://www.sendspace.com/file/r7dafd

It implements some changes regarding the scroll acceleration. If it works please also judge if the acceleration is too fast now compared to the old implementation. Thanks in advance!

Sorry for the late answer. I'm very busy now (and yesterday). I'll try your suggestions tomorrow evening. Thanks for your work Buschel!

Buschel, I've have tested a few releases of Rockbox. In all versions (including your version), the list did not accelerate if the 'List Acceleration Start Delay' was set to 'Off'. Below the results:

[release][acceleration works]    [smooth scrolling]
3.2YESYES
3.3YESYES
3.4YESYES
3.5YESYES
3.5.1YESYES
3.6NONO
3.7NONO
3.7.1NONO
your build      YESNO

In release 3.6 and newer, the scrolling is not smoothly anymore, but choppy. Also, your build has choppy scrolling. Apparently, something has changed when version 3.6 was released, as all prior builds were fine. As far as I can judge (that's difficult because of the choppiness), the acceleration speed is fine in your build.

Thanks for the perfect test! I will submit the fix to get acceleration running again later today.

I am not sure what introduced the choppyness. Maybe this is an effect of any CPU-intense playback? Does it happen when not playing a file?

The choppy scrolling does also happen when nothing is played back.

I *think* I'm going to put that down to "only just noticed it".

A while ago now Buschel did a rework of the iPod Nano/Color LCD, and I noticed the same thing.
"Tearing" I described it as....and I was very much concerned with the fact (when I noticed it personally) that it may have been caused by the vastly increased throughput of the LCD.

However, I rolled back as far as 3.5 at that time and it was still there for me, so I figure I just never paid it very much attention until I had reason to.

Perhaps this is the case here too?

A little update:

[release]   [acceleration works]  [smooth scrolling]
3.8.1YESNO
3.9YESNO

So still the choppy scrolling. Does someone else have an iRiver H10 20GB with this problem too? @ St.: I can clearly see the difference between pre 3.6 versions and later versions.
