Sansa Clip Plus Long Files
« on: March 05, 2011, 11:42:08 PM »
I just bought a Sansa Clip+, and I used to be an old Rockbox user on my long dead Archos Jukebox Recorder.  I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.  I have a lot of radio shows, some that exceed 3 hours.  I notice that when I listen to a long audio file, mp3, at about the 1 hour mark, the player shuts down and I have to hold the power button to do a reset.  I have my player set to resume where it leftoff when shutdown.  After the reset, the player will resume from a different place, or different file.  I have not tried playing these long files with the Sansa firmware yet, to see if it's the player or Rockbox.  Regular music files play fine.  The long files are mp3s off all different bitrates.  Any suggestions?

Thanks!  :D

Never heard of this problem.  Can you post the exact version of rockbox you're running, and a link to one of these files?

I listened to a couple of very long MP3 files recently (well over 3 hours), and they worked fine (on a Sansa Fuze V2). Precision when seeking wasn't the best (sometimes off by half a minute or so), but given that they were VBR files, it wasn't surprising.

Precision in seeking has always been a pet peeve of mine. In the past (I don't know if it's still true) I could attempt to seek a short distance in one direction, and end up at a point in the song that was in the *other* direction from my origin point.

Made it worse
« Reply #4 on: March 07, 2011, 05:22:05 PM »
Woops!  My 16GB SD card had, I believe, 32k clusters.  I thought maybe reformatting the drive with 4k clusters would help.  It made the problem much worse.  Now, the Clip+ frequently freezes.

Can someone give me the best cluster size for FAT32 for a 16GB drive?

And, does anyone know of a free partition software I can use to resize clusters without reformatting?

Thanks.

The best cluster size for a drive that will contain large, never-edited files like music is as large as possible.

Making clusters larger without reformatting is very difficult and slow, and I wouldn't suggest you use anything to do it; it will be far quicker and safer to just format it and copy all the files onto it again.

If your problem happens with RB 3.8 it could be related with the database bug (see somewhere in the forum).
Try installing a more recent build or 3.7.1, it worked perfectly for me (http://download.rockbox.org/release/3.7.1/rockbox-sansaclipplus-3.7.1.zip)

Weird.  Found it right before you posted, but the Clip+ won't talk the menus.  Not the end of the world.  I'll try 3.7.1 for awhile and see if the problem with freezing goes away.  I put english.voice in the right place, but it just won't talk.

LOL.  Never mind.  Talking now.  Hope this works.  Thanks a lot!  BTW, as a legally blind user, the speech is awesome!  Generated .talk files, and all is good.  :D:D

Installed the 3.7.1, and it played for over two and a half hours with no problem.  Guess I'll stick to this version until the next upgrade.  Thanks all so much.  :D :D
