use USB drive to extend ipod storage?

Well, i had this crazy idea and i´m not sure if its posibble to create a homemade cable to connect the ipod with an external drive over the dock. Even if that's possible, is there any way to view the content of the drive using rockbox?? it should be AWESOME for my 2gb nano 1G. I think its impossible because of the voltage the ipod provides via the dock, but i'm not sure.To test,  I have an external drive wich is connected to an external source of electricity, and other wich dont, both USB. Someone would need to implement a USB Host mode.  If you search for "USB host" you will find some old discussions about this.
