Big problem Toshiba Gigabeat S error 5
« on: March 03, 2011, 07:25:30 AM »
Hi,
I had Rockbox on my gigabeat with dualboot mode. After some time of working fine it crushed. Device gives an error 5 in yelow triangle. I tried to restore the original firmware, however an error occure during sending data. Win xp recognises device as an MTP player. Bestpatcher doesnt work as well. Tried to send an nk.bin file from original firmware using beastpatcher by command prompt. Nothing work. How can I do some kind of Hard reset or sth like that??

Please Help!

Which version of Windows Media Player do you have installed? There is a known issue on Windows XP with WMP10. Updating to WMP11 fixes that.

As for hard reset, the player has a battery switch. This won't fix issues with a broken firmware file though.

The recover.bat mentioned there is not linked anywhere and sendfirm.exe's functionality is also part of beastpatcher. You could of course try a Linux live CD to make sure sending the firmware file doesn't fail because of some issue with Windows itself. The beastpatcher binary for Linux is statically built so any recent live CD should do.

Nice...and how can i put Gigabeat S into recovery mode?? When i run an exe file it doesn't work. Also some short manual about using the sendfirm.exe would be nice. I've found this http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/GigabeatSInstallation#Recovery_Mode  Thanks for your replies!! Also i'd like to add that I've also tried to send an nk.bin file from the original softwear into my gigabeat using the beastpatcher and prompt line. I've been using -d and -s command although don't know what they mean :/ (the letters) hmm I'm noob :P

sendfirm is very old, don't use it. beastpatcher has the same functionality built in.

Your computer doesn't need to see the device in that mode. Just send a file:
Code: [Select]
beastpatcher -s nk.bin

beastpatcher -s does essentially the same as sendfirm.

Are you booting the OF when you try to run beastpatcher?  (Not sure what state your player is in when you're trying to run beastpatcher.)

How exactly does this "refuse" look like? Do you get an error message? Also, have you tried using a linux live CD? Another thing I could imagine is a broken USB port and / or cable. Have you tried replacing that?

Hello everybody. It's my another attempt to repair my bricked gigabeat s. Here are some answears for some unansweared qyestions that has appeared before.

State 1) Gigabeat starts with blue "gigabeat" screen. After a while it gives an error 5. In this state device is visible by windows (My computer) as MTP Device Upgradeing firmware by using original application crushes with an error "failed to send..." even though it has found the device before and has started the sending procedure. While useing the beastpatcher.exe I've got this:

[info]foun device "toshiba gigabeat s"
[info] device version: "0"
[info] sending firmware...

[err] error occured during sending.
[err] botloader instal failed.

State 2) Gigabeat starts with blue "gigabeat" screen. I'm pushing left button on the cross and the windows button. Device starts with error triangle 3 Is not seen by win as MTP device. Also beastpatcher gives:

[err] no device found

what do you think? Am i at least clear?? Any explenations on using life cd on linux?? what does chronom means talking aboud using OF?? (what is OF??)

OF just means "original firmware".

It errors while sending firmware.  Maybe this suggests a flaky USB connection.  Are you sure the USB port and cable are both good?

Problem solved! I've disassembled my Gigabeat. Unplugged the batteryand plugged it back. After switching on it booted with dual boot and started the rockbox. So everything is working now just as before the error appeared.
