If your USB is semi-broken, then that would explain the connection problems, and also Rockbox problems if it was corrupted in the transfer.

Check (a) the cable (sometimes cables are semi-broken and still work somewhat), and (b) try a different USB port. Especially front USB ports are reported to be unreliable at times.
