Ipod is now a brick
steelblade:
I have an ipod classic that autodetected as ipod/color/photo/u2 (4th gen) (stable), whiile installing RockboxUtility-v1.2.8. The install seemed to go fine. I was able to access the device, but hadn't figured out how to add music to it. I unplugged it (After setup was done, themes added, etc and the install program was closed) and now when I plug it back in, there is no response at all. No boot up, the computer doesn't recognise it as a device, and the menu/select hard reset does nothing.
What can I do to either get this to work, or go back to the previous firmware?

Then it's not an Ipod Classic, it's an Ipod 4th gen. There is a major difference between those.

The reset combination *does* work. Sometimes it needs flipping the hold switch on and off again first, and it might need quite a while (30+ sec). Since that functionality is in hardware it will work. If not you're experiencing hardware issues.

That means that Rockbox does run. I can't see a reason why you should get a data abort immediately after installing. You probably have filesystem issues, or a bad download.

Thanks bluebrother.
Right before leaving for work I looked again, THEN it started to bring up the apple logo, then fade away to dark. After a couple of tries I got a low battery warning. I thought it had about a half charge, but I may have been wrong.
Ipod classic? 4th gen? I'll confess that I know nothing of Ipods. This device to me is better classified as "3rd generation hand me down" :)
I plugged it in to let it charge (It wasn't in my USB from my computer. Sometimes the hub charges, my old smartphone for example, and sometimes it doesn't. When I get home (and it should be fully charged by then) I'll try again.
Post Merge: February 28, 2011, 07:39:51 PMWell, it's not a brick like it first looked, but its not much better. When I attach it to my USB port, the first time I got the same error as above, after that I got the little USB picture and the Disk Mode notice, but it would not connect. The computer wouldn't even acknowledge it was there. I tried both my hub and straight to the computer with no difference.
Post Merge: February 28, 2011, 10:14:40 PMAfter the last post I went to the gym (sans music :'() and when I came back, the device was ready to connect. I started to copy files, got my hendrix and some video files moved and the connection stopped. After a few it started again, then stopped again, then started again.
MInd you, the device is sitting right on my table untouched the whole time. No wiggling, shaking, etc.
Anyone have any ideas?

It does sound like some dodgy hardware to me, probably the disk. You could try checking it (chkdsk on Windows) if you managed to get it connected for long enough.

Thanks alex.
Not sure what the problem is, but at work the ipod stays connected just fine. My wife tells me that she remembers having some connection problems with just the Ipod firmware when the device was first handed down to her. It may be the USB on the computer I use at home, though it doesn't give similar troubles with other hardware (webcams, thumb drives, etc.)
Still. Now my only problem is can I fit all my music at once. :)
