data abort at 00064AFC (0) [ipod 5.5, rb 3.7.1]

first, I hope this is the right forum to post this.

ipod 5.5g, rockbox 3.7.1, inadvertently went into Recording while playback was active.  did a reboot using menu & select @ same time, rockbox screen came up and then went to a completely white screen saying data abort at 00064AFC (0).  if I try a reboot it comes up the same.

pretty sure I didn't brick my ipod, but not sure what I *did* do and don't know how to recover from this boo boo

any advice?

update-- thought to install the latest (r29401).  upon reboot

Undefined instruction at 40008190 (0).

I'm thinking perhaps completely uninstall rockbox and then install again??

As a note to the poster, and any other iPod owners that stumble across this:

Please, *please* avoid using Menu+Select to reset the iPod unless it is ABSOLUTELY necessary.

This case would be: Having no other way to physically power down the iPod (ie. the iPod doesn't respond to "long Play")

A "Menu+Select" reboot is the equivalent of yanking the power cord out of the back of your PC, or flipping the switch on and off at the wall and is an almost guaranteed recipe for disk corruption.

You wouldn't do that to your computer unless there was no other option, would you? ;)

To finalize, the procedure for a reboot in Rockbox for iPods is simply to hold the "Play" key until the iPod shuts down, and then use any other key to restart the player.

This is of course negated if there is no other way to power the iPod down naturally.

todd94590,

It is likely that there is some corruption present on your disk caused by the hard reset during a period of heavy disk activity (it's not good to do it at the best of times), checking the file system for errors would likely be in your best interests.
Do a dry run first and then let it attempt to repair or recover any errors it finds, if any.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

in regard to the hard-reset, obviously I need to go back and RTFM... last time I read through it (2 years ago?) I do not recall your sage advise of menu + select as an option of last resort.  While I have used long play, I've used menu+select more.

Having not yet gone through the manual again/yet, I do hope this is more pointed out as the better option/choice.  Thank you for making the point-- I shall follow the advice.

The complete uninstall/reinstall worked for me.  I did do a thorough chkdisk, and thankfully no errors.  I'd hate to screw up anything in the 240 gig hd (which, btw, is mostly full of everything/anything I want to listen to-- and mostly lossless format).

Again, thank you for the advise (long play vs. menu+select)!

I also got a data abort, 0004ee60 (0), on an ipod 5.5g with rb 3.8. I updated last night, worked fine, turned it on this morning tried to play a song and got the error. Long play doesn't turn it off, it's not recognized by my computer, and when I do a menu+select reset it starts to commit database and when it gets to 4/9 the data abort screen pops up. Anyone have any ideas? Is there any way to stop the commit to database after a reset?

Hello fukuisan87,

I had a similar problem. Check my post here: http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php/topic,27356.0.html
For me reinstalling rockbox 3.8, being patient and rebooting my ipod several times (unfortunately having to use menu+select) solved the problem with the database not building. After some cycles everything went fine. No data aborts or rockbox not booting. To make your player being recognised by your computer boot into the original firmware.

Greetings,

Thanks cereal. Booted into Apple firmware and then reinstalled rockbox, haven't had any issues since.
