Fuze v2 - scroll wheel appears to have died

(1/1)

Strife89:
A friend of mine has been happily using a used Fuze (purchased through Amazon) since mid-December 2010. Recently, however, he has told me that the scroll wheel is no longer working, and pressing the directions on the wheel will sometimes cease to work until he reboots the Fuze.

Can anything be done to check on and/or fix the Fuze, or is it better to just buy a new DAP?

He is suspect of possible water damage; where it might have come from, I don't know.

Loose scrollwheel ribbon cable?

(This post is intended to assist the friend. He can view the thread, but it would be a PITA for him to reply directly or conduct searches.)

Brief repair guide; only the first two steps are needed.

Be careful of that ribbon connector there, that will be vulnerable as soon as the device is opened so don't over-open the case or you will damage it.  It is very easy to damage them.  You will need something to close the latch on that ribbon connector when you are ready to put the fuze back together.  The cable is not long enough to access with the device fully opened.  Honestly the fragile ribbon and scroll-wheel assembly are the most noticeable drawbacks to the sansa fuze.
