ipod video 60 Gb - rockbox-utility installation problem
jbrandtp:
Hello.
I've been trying to install rockbox on a 60 gb ipodvideo.
I think I have successfully formatted the drive to FAT 32, and I have placed the .rockbox folder on the drive.
When I open the rockbox utility app, I chose browse and point to the iPod, and when I click Autodetect it identifies it as an iPod Video.
The I click complete installation I get an error:
"could not retrieve device name"
and nothing else happens.
Can anyone here help me?
(I've been using Rockbox on a HP140 for many years - it is the best!)
bluebrother:
Is ehe original IPod firmware installiert an does it run?
jbrandtp:
The drive is formatted and no iPod-software is present - only the .rockbox folder.
The following (invisible) files are present:
._.Trashes
._502
.fseventsd (folder)
.rockbox (folder)
.Trashes (folder)
502 (folder)
How do I check it's firmware version?
All the best
torne:
In order to install Rockbox the iPod's original software must be able to boot first. The bootloader cannot be installed to an ordinary partition, it needs to be installed into Apple's invisible firmware partition with the correct format and the other Apple firmware files being present. This cannot be removed as the boot ROM in the iPod expects it to be there.
So, if you can't currently boot the iPod into the original firmware then you need to restore it first. The easiest way is to use iTunes on a Windows computer.
jbrandtp:
OK, this is not very clear in the installation-manual.
Can I do this from a mac also?
I do not use iTunes, and that is also the reason I want to install Rockbox.
