IPOD Claasic 160GB and lots of Qs

let me introduce myself first. I'm an very new to that forum. So i am a nob. This is not the first forum i signed up for. So i know all dumb answer for dumb nob question.
I tried to find all topic related answers. But after serious investigation i am as dumb as before. So here are all my question.
Hardware actual  IPOD Classic 160GB bought 3 weeks ago
According to my sources  http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/Status this should be the 3rd generation. ? YES / No

Or is this page not related to Rockbox?

Is it right to use Rockbox on this device? Y/N
Can i still use the ITunes App. as the loading software?? Y/N
If i don't like the firmware i can easily go back to the APPLE Firmware? Y/N

The freemyipod team helped with the port of Rockbox to the iPod nano 2nd gen and the iPod Classic, so in a sense they're affiliated with us.

As for your questions:

1) If it's not a thick 160GB model, you should be able to run Rockbox.
2) At this point, Rockbox completely replaces the firmware on the iPod Classic. We may have a dual-boot setup done when someone manages to implement it.
3) If you don't like Rockbox, simply restore your iPod factory settings in iTunes.

I suspect that 2) actually means can he use itunes to transfer tracks; if so then yes but you will have to use the Rockbox database as itunes gives files stupid names and puts them in stupidly named directories when transferring.

However, one Q i still have.

I have download the i Pod classic loader, and i have tried to get my i pod classic into dfu mode. but i have failed sooooooo many times.
Should i uninstall itunes ,
 Maybe there is a pagewritten for dummies to get there where i wanna to be.

That's correct. Since there's no OF anymore, iTunes would only recognize the iPod Classic as being corrupted or in recovery mode, as my own personal experience has shown me. So in this sort of case, you would have to copy your music over manually.

Now, as for DFU mode...

You need to press and hold MENU+SELECT until the iPod resets itself, and continue to hold the buttons until it resets a second time and shows a black screen. Once the screen goes black, release the buttons and connect your iPod; it should be picked up by your OS as a DFU device.

As yes, good point - I forgot there is no dual boot for now.

i followed your in struktions, but everytime when the screen goes dark after the logo appares and i relase the buttons the ipod goes on.


is there a vid around i can see how it works, iam either dumb,,,, or i donno

I have the strong feeling that you're not waiting for the iPod to reset the *second* time.

It's important to keep holding the Menu+Select combination until the iPod resets, and *keep* holding it...it's quite literally something that you cannot mess up if you hold the key combination for too long, as far as I know you can only mess it up by not holding it for long enough.

So: The iPod is in an on state
     ~press Menu+Select (and continue to hold it) the iPod will reset
     ~the Apple logo appears (continue holding Menu+Select), some time seconds will pass
     ~the screen will transition to a full black state
     ~this is DFU Mode

Eventually adding an improved version "FS#10023 - iTunes communication for software USB targets" for the Ipod Classic might be a good idea.
