can't load rockbox.ipod: file not found

i lent my older ipod to a friend, forgetting that i had installed rockbox on it a while back. he tried his hand unsuccessfully at uninstalling it, and now i am left with this:

-my computer doesn't recognize that the ipod has been plugged in
-on the ipod it says "error! can't load rockbox.ipod: file not found"
-i can't use the utility, since the ipod won't appear on my computer, i can't select it ... or automatically detect it.

You haven't uninstalled the bootloader but only the main Rockbox binary. Put the Ipod into disk mode and complete (un)installation.
