Help, where'd my rockbox go?
« on: February 11, 2011, 12:17:40 PM »
I've had Rockbox on my Sansa (e series) and suddenly it disappeared. How can I find it again?  Thanks!

Depends what you did to get rid of it.  Probably just reboot or reinstall.

Well, that's the thing... I didn't take it off! It was there -  plugged it into computer - it disappeared. I have 6 Sansa E's ( whole family owns one) and never had that happen before. I tried to just reinstall and I keep getting some msg saying "Bootloader installation requires you to provide a firmware file of the original firmware (bin file). You need to download this file yourself for legal reason........"

Well, I have searched the forums, etc and can not find the stinking file. I can not load rockbox on my Fuze for the same reason. I love my sansa but ONLY with rockbox installed!!!!

Any help?

It sounds like you booted the Sandisk firmware.  As I suggested above, try rebooting back into Rockbox.

The instructions tell you where to find that file.  Read and follow them.

I guess I'm clueless on how to do that.  :o Hubby usually handles the rockbox stuff but he's away. Can you please *talk* me through it? Thanks ever so much!

If you hold the power button it should force the player to power down.  Pressing power again will boot the player and if Rockbox is properly installed it should boot.

If it really isn't installed then we can pursue finding a firmware file for you.  At this point, I still find the possibility that your player simply booted into the original firmware more likely.

:'( Nope, doesn't seem to work. I turn on, it goes into Sansa mode, I hold power button down & it just goes off. Hold down again it just comes back on and goes back to the sansa mode.

Since this one is my daughters player I wonder if somehow she did something and then happened to get into settings and reset to default and that erased it. Just guessing. That seems far fetched as she is 7 but who know what she did! LOL SIGH

I sure would appreciate help in finding that file do I could just re-install RockBox and move on.  Thank you for all your help!

Other than e Series, you've not actually mentioned your player type...unless I've managed to miss it several times.

EDIT: You mention you cannot load Rockbox onto your Fuze for the same reason....have you tried reading our fine manual?
It outlines the installation procudure for both manual and automated installation.
(it will also have a direct link to SanDisk where you can download the firmware file for your player)

So, you plugged it in and Rockbox firmware booted?

Or, you plugged it in and you can view that the .rockbox file is present whilst exploring?

Sorry, I didn't realize it was important as to size. It is an E260 V.1.02.24A

I see the rockbox files when exploring. I still can't get it to play using rockbox.

As for the fuze - I have not seen your manual but I have gone to Sansa and all I see to DL is the Sansa updater which I have gotten.

Are you sure that the player is autodetected by Rockbox Utility correctly?

EDIT: For you to be getting that error from Rockbox Utility asking you to point it to a firmware file, it sounds as though it thinks it's dealing with a V2 model instead.

Can you describe the steps you are taking with Rockbox Utility?  Does your player get auto-detected, or are you manually selecting the model and location?

Thanks! Hubby got home and said it was Vista that was causing the issues. Took it to another computer in the house that was non-vista and set it right up. Lost all my stuff that was on it but no real biggie as I have backups!

Thanks so much for all your help!!! :-*
