Sorry, but I don't use WMP12.  Maybe someone else can help you with that. 

If you are willing to investigate other options, any program that allows you to browse the songs on your player and build a playlist should work.  I believe Foobar2000 will do what you want.

Rockbox will work with .m3u8 or .m3u playlist.  They are basically the same, but m3u8 implies unicode support.
