How do I paste FM Logo/skins for the Smart/Smartie Theme?
(1/1)
Per:
I have an Sansa e200v1 and i just installed the Smartie Theme (very nice!).
Its written:
"Paste your station logo on the provided fm-backdrop.bmp to make it look transparent (jpg and bmp do not have transparency, no png support yet) ."
Can I just use one theme? Or can i use several themes for my 8 fm stations?
How do i do this? Do i need several fm-backdrop.bmp? Like fm-backdrop01.bmp
fm-backdrop02.bmp?
Please help me!

I admit that the wording here could be better, so I can see how you got confused.
The author of the theme is simply suggesting that if you would like to make your FM art appear as though it had a transparent backdrop, to paste your FM-Art/station logo onto the background provided.
You would still need to do a lot of manual editing to achieve this "transparent" effect, though.
And it makes no mention of how to use FM art properly, but I guess the author assumes a user will either look into this themselves, or already know how to do so.
You will still need to have an image with the same name as the preset that you want the art displayed for in your presets directory for FM art to work. The author of the theme is just suggesting to use the file fm-backdrop.bmp as a basis to work from if you would like the illusion of transparency.
Simply editing fm-backdrop.bmp and leaving it as is will do no good, as that file is never actually called by them theme at all.
For FM art to work the artwork to be displayed must share the same name as the preset it is to be displayed for, and be found in the presets directory.
EDIT: You mention both the SMART and SMARTie themes, this is only relevant for the SMART theme, the file fm-backdrop.bmp does not exist in the SMARTie theme.
It should also be noted that messing around with this backdrop file is not necessary at all in order to get FM art functioning in the .fms for either the SMART, or SMARTie, (or any) themes.

To show simple FM station logos you need these in the ".rockbox/fmpresets/" directory: a preset file for your region (".fmr") and image files in format "bmp" or "jpg" with the exact name from the preset file. The radio has to be tuned in "preset" mode (manual section "B. Theme Tags" go to "B.22 FM Radio" at the bottom - "Radio Art").
The fake transparent look is just a fancy way to show some logos if you have the time and patience to do it. Also the modified logos (as bellow) will probably not display nice on other themes (they will have the "fm-backdrop.bmp" background). It is probably better to stick with simple logos if you switch among many themes.
Maybe some future rockbox versions may add support for real transparent logos and all this won't be necessary.
Here is in detail how it goes:
Get your station logo on a pure white background, in a size slightly less than 96x96 pixels (this is the most difficult part as it may require editing/resizing; it is better to start with a PNG logo that has alpha channel transparency and try to see if it looks ok on a dark background).
open the file ".rockbox/wps/smart/fm-backdrop.bmp" in Microsoft Paint. Open your logo in another instance of Microsoft Paint, use Edit->Select All and Edit->Copy. In the Paint window with the fm-backdrop unselect the menu option Image->Draw Opaque (the picture bellow shows the toolbox transparency selection area ). use Edit->Paste (Ctrl+V) and center your logo as you please. Save it (Save As) in the .rockbox/fmpresets/ with the exact preset name from the .fmr file and extension ".bmp". That is it.
