There would probably need to be some sort of threshold setting.  Sometimes "silence" isn't quite digital silent depending upon the original source such as analog tape hiss and condition of tape.

It would also make the time remaining in a track or in what is in the buffer unpredictable which could cause buffering watermarks to not work as intended causing gaps while buffering. So yes, i'd also suggest setting up a pc side tool to do this preprocessing for you, maybe ther's one that can be scripted or otherwise automated.
