SOLVED: doesn't install on iRiver H340

Hi,

I tried to install Rockbox on my iRiver H340 using the Rockbox Utility yesterday, but was unsuccessful in doing so. That is, the installation procedure runs fine and I can see there is an updated and slightly bigger H300.hex in the root folder of the player (along with a .Rockbox folder with other stuff), but when I run the firmware upgrade on the H340 (which it claims to perform too) and start it, it just loads the original (1.29EU) firmware.

Does anybody have any idea what might be going on here?

Try flashing again. There have been reports that the h300 sometimes needs flashing twice.

Thanks for your reply. I've tried reflashing (up to five times in a row), but to no avail.

Is there anything else I can try/check/pray for?

So this is it? My Rockbox adventure ends before it has even really started...?  :'(

You could try to flash the unmodifed firmware (the one which you give to Rockbox utility), to see if your player accepts the file.
If it doesnt, try another firmware version.

I don't know exactly what I did, but after deleting, re-installing and reflashing with a different version of the OF, I now have a working Rockbox installation on my H340! (If someone had told me 5 years ago that I would be playing Doom on it, I would have had them committed to a mental institute...)

I recently picked up an Iriver H340 in a car boot and I would love to figure out how to install Rockbox. Thing is, not matter how manner times I read the manual for installing Rockbox it frightens the life out of me, its seems so damn technical. Any chance as youve already managed it successfully you could help an old codger like me? the only thing I know for sure is that I already have 1.29EU firmeware already on it. I would love someone to take me through it step by step without getting too techy.

Rockbox Utility will patch the original firmware file and place the result on the player. Then perform the firmware upgrade of the player and you're done. The only known issue is that some players require flashing the firmware that gets placed on the player twice (seems in this case its been a bit more reluctant though).

Thanks a lot! You gave me the confidence I needed to have a go, and YEA! I have Rockbox up and running. It realy was easy after all. I think I was originally frightened off by reading the 'manual installation' instructions, when all I needed was the Automatic installation. Many thanks!! Loving Rockbox by the way!

(I have similar sounding problem, H320 US.) Normal upgrade is always successful.

I've tried at least with 1.28-EU and 1.29-JP. I've always flashed twice. I also reverted back to 1.04 US firmware and again back to EU version. Should it matter which EU/JP/KR version I install first?

Btw, "Remove bootloader" option in the Utility gives "Rockbox Utility can not uninstall the bootloader on this target. Try a normal firmware update to remove the booloader", is that typical for H300 series or is it related to my problem?

Just thought I'd add my 0.02c here, I picked up a used iRiver H340 and after I'd removed the virii AVG found on its hard drive  I set about trying to install Rockbox, I kept getting similar problems as described above. I was using Windows 7 64bit edition, I decided to try using my laptop which runs Windows XP (32bit) and voila, had no problems at all, happily running Rockbox for the first time and loving it. Thought I'd post here in case this might be the case for others and it had been overlooked. Cheers.

^ Thanks for the info... can anyone else confirm this? Don't really feel like installing 32 bit Windows just for this if it doesn't work then.
