Themes are not working properly
« on: January 31, 2011, 02:27:07 AM »
Hi,

As my Subject states, Themes are not working properly.

I love RB on my Sandisk Sansa e200 player and have been using RB for over 2 years - always using the Manual Install method, and I am not interested in using the Automatic Installer.

Recently updated to 3.7.1 and thereafter all Themes stop working properly.  In short, while colors change, the screen displayed during playback is the same for ALL themes - displaying text only with horizontal L/R view meters at the bottom.

To resolve this problem, I elected to remove RB (except for the bootloader) from my e200 and reinstalled it as well as my Themes.  This did not resolve the problem.

I'm confident that I am missing something here because RB is such an extraordinary program.

Any suggestions are sincerely appreciated.

Thanks,

CurlySue ;D

The RB theme "e200_Steel_2.0" states that it "Works with current build" and with my Sansa E200 it works perfectly.

In contrast to the RB theme "e200_Steel_2.0" . . .

. . . "arboxWidgets" states that it "Works with current build" however, with my Sansa E200, there are problems.  Sadly, prior to 3.7, the previously installed version worked perfectly.

. . . "Black_and_Blue" states that it "Works with current build" and "Works with release 3.7" however, with my Sansa E200, there are problems.  Sadly, prior to 3.7, the previously installed version worked perfectly.

Prior to RB release 3.7, the above thems were among my favorites - sadly, my previous favorite is no longer listed on the Sansa E200 Theme page.  I shall continue to test a few other RB themes and report my findings.

Thanks again, JD, for steering me in the proper direction.

Again, with my Sansa E200 and release 3.7.1 installed, RB Themes . . .

. . . E200Rock and LicidPlain - WORK PERFECTLY.

. . . 2001 A Space Oddyssey, Smart, and Ultima - all have problems.

It's up to the themes authors to maintain them, if they don't....there's not a lot that can be done about it.

The "Works with <_Blah_>" simply means that the syntax is valid, it doesn't mean at all that it will still display as intended.

The Rockbox source is constantly moving, and adapting, growing, and themes need to adapt with the code in order to function as intended...a lot of theme authors don't do this.

The only reason there's even half as many themes available fot the current release today is because the themesite was archived before the "major skin-breaking changes project', and the themes were batch updated with a script before being re-submitted to what you know as the themesite today.

Unfortunately, that script could not forsee the need to place certain elements in their own viewports (which has now become necessary if viewports are used elsewhere in the theme), so some themes remain "broken" while the syntax is still technically valid.

Now...the beauty of it all is that there is a light!

Themes on the theme site are licensed CC-BY-SA, so you're totally free to fix up your favourite theme yourself (after all..it's not *my* favourite theme, or that other guys favourite theme...it's *yours* right? ;)) and upload the fixed version to the theme site for all to enjoy!

And of course, if you need help in doing so there are many fine documents available on our wiki, and many people including myself happy to help you via the forums.

Thanks for your reply and for sharing your insight regarding RB 3.7.X and how it effected existing Themes, St.
